Day 18 of the Big Naked Pain and Brain Campaign: Music to my ears
Persistent Pain suffers often describe how their symptoms affect their schema, their person. They can feel trapped or incarcerated by their pain. It is difficult to understand individuals in persistent pain as it is individual to them. In this clip from the Shawshank redemption the prison could be used as a metaphor to describe being trapped by pain. In order to over come this Andy has had a delivery of books and records and decides to play one, projecting it over the speakers for the entire prison to hear. A single moment showed a period of solitude for Andy. He got lost in the music and imagined himself a free man not surrounded by brick walls.
Music Therapy is a wonderful way to distract you away from the perpetuating cycle of persistent pain (reference). Choose a piece of music that reminds you of a happy, memorable, exciting or funny time in your life or to just allow you periods of calm and seclusion.
